• Rotten egg smell. The most common sign of a gas leak is a smell like rotten eggs. Federal law actually requires that this smell be added to all natural gas, so leaks can be more easily detected. If you smell rotten eggs, sewage, or sulfur, get out of your home and call someone immediately. Gas leaks can be dangerous, though they are usually solved without incident when you call in experts quickly.
• Dead vegetation. If your gas is leaking under the ground, you may never have the chance to smell it. However, the leak still needs to be repaired. If you notice a patch of grass or other vegetation that is dying for no reason or that you cannot revive, give us a call. We’ll determine whether a gas line runs under the plants and, if it does, we’ll test it and repair it.
• A hissing sound. If you are near a gas line and you hear a steady hissing sound, there’s a good chance that the line has a leak. The hissing is the gas escaping the line. While it’s unlikely that you will spend enough time around your gas lines to notice this, we have had it happen. Listening for the hissing can also help pinpoint the exact location of a leak, so you can tell your technician where to look.
• Small bubbles. If you’re not sure whether or not your gas line is leaking, you can perform the bubble test. First, make sure that the outside of the line is clean and that you have good light in your work area. Then, get a sponge and a small amount of dish soap. Soak the sponge in soap and run it over the area where you think the leak might exist. Watch and see if any bubbles appear on your line. If they do, you have a leak and you know exactly where it is!
